Assistant Conductor
Canadian conductor Geneviève Leclair was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Boston Ballet Orchestra at the beginning of the 2010-2011 season and has since regularly conducted mainstage
productions with the company. She also became Music Director of the Parkway Concert Orchestra in 2013. In March 2010, Ms. Leclair was the recipient of the Sir Ernest MacMillan Memorial Foundation Award in orchestral conducting and won, for the second consecutive year, the position of apprentice conductor for the 2010 summer season of Boris Brott's National Academy Orchestra of Canada.
In recent years, Ms. Leclair has had the opportunity to step on the podium of various orchestras, including the McGill Chamber Orchestra, Lexington Symphony, Symphony New Hampshire, Longwood Symphony, and Brookline Symphony. Her performances have been hailed as "impeccable" (Boston Phoenix), "ravishing" and of "exemplary pacing and reading" (Hugh Fraser). Active on the new music scene, she has collaborated with soloists of international stature and has premiered pieces by many contemporary composers including Alan Belkin, Éric Champagne, Brian Harman and Maxime Goulet.
From 2005 to 2008, Ms. Leclair was General and Artistic Director of Ensemble Euterpe, a Montréal-based orchestra she also founded. She has participated in a number of international conducting master classes including the Contemporary Music Conducting Workshop in Kromeriz, Czech Republic and Maestro Kenneth Kiesler's famous Conductor's Retreat at Medomak. In November 2010, she was invited by the National Arts Center Orchestra (Ottawa) to attend the first edition of their Canadian Conductors Workshop.
Ms. Leclair holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Orchestral Conducting from Boston University under the tutelage of Maestro David Hoose. She had previously obtained Bachelor's and Master's degrees in flute performance at Université de Montréal, the later under the supervision of Mr. Denis Bluteau, associate principal flutist of Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal. Her other teachers and mentors include Boris Brott, Kenneth Kiesler, Dr. Ann Howard Jones, Susan Hoeppner, Camille Churchfield and Jeanne Baxtresser.
In addition to playing flute and piccolo in various ensembles, Ms. Leclair has taught her instrument - as well as music theory and ear training - at École de musique Vincent-d'Indy, Académie de musique Pierre-Laporte, and École des jeunes de l'Université de Montréal from 2001 to 2008 and for the Community Programs of the Longy School of Music of Bard College in 2012 and 2013. She is also a published author of musical literature and theory exercise books, Les Devoirs du prof Rémi, through Les Éditions École de musique Vincent-d'Indy.
