        • BEGINNER LEVEL – designed for students who either have no previous ballet experience or for those returning to ballet after a break. Students will be introduced to the basic arm and leg positions, the concept of turnout and developing coordination through simple exercises at the barre and in the centre.

BEGINNER/ELEMENTARY LEVEL – aimed as a bridge between Beginner and Elementary. The vocabulary is increased through longer combinations at the barre and the centre. The concepts of turning, adagio and petit allegro are introduced as students develop their knowledge of ballet vocabulary.

ELEMENTARY LEVEL – designed for students who have completed a Beginner level class or have had at least 2-3 years of prior ballet experience. Barre work includes balances in all positions, turning and port de bras. Centre work includes the use of the body directions in combinations, with the beginnings of grand allegro (large traveling jumps).

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL – aimed at students with a complete knowledge of barre and centre work, or who have completed the Elementary level. More complex combinations of steps are introduced, and classes are taught at a faster pace.

ADVANCED LEVEL – designed for students who are either professional or former professional dancers, or are currently studying at a professional school. This is the highest level of training offered at Boston Ballet School.

CHARACTER DANCE – is based on national and folkloric traditional dance. Wearing special character shoes, the technique incorporates both barre and centre work as in classical ballet, but focuses on style, musicality and rhythm, coordination and épaulement.

PILATES – is based on the classical Pilates series of mat exercises, which focuses on developing and maintaining dynamic core strength while increasing flexibility and lengthening muscles. Emphasis is placed on developing a healthy awareness of posture and breath supporting the flow and efficiency of movement.

LIFELONG DANCE – is a ballet class specifically designed for seniors (60+) honoring each individual’s possibilities and range of motion. It includes a gentle ballet barre, then stretch and strengthening exercises on the mat, and finally a ballet center with simple and elegant combinations of tendus, adage and traveling steps across the floor. The whole class encourages a balanced use of the overall musculature to ease the work of the joints, and align the body for optimal posture, while enjoying dance in the golden years.

        • Dress Code Information:

The only traditional ballet attire we require of our adult students is ballet slippers. Otherwise, students wear what is easy to move in and makes them feel most at ease. For some, this is the traditional leotard and tights; for others, this is closer to typical work-out clothing – sweats, leggings, t-shirts.

Whatever you choose to wear, we ask that it be form fitted, stretchy, allow for freedom of movement and be comfortable. Longer hair should be pulled back away from the face and dangling jewelry is discouraged

          Frequently Asked Questions:

          What are Open Adult classes?
Boston Ballet School’s Open Adult classes allow for a more flexible course of study for students ages 16 and older. Classes are offered at Boston, Newton, and Marblehead on a drop-in basis with no pre-registration required. Students sign-in and pay before each class with a Studio Administrator. Classes are offered in a variety of technique levels, as well as in Modern, Character, Pilates, and Ballet Workout.

Are there locker rooms available for students?
Yes, Boston Ballet School studios have changing facilities available for student use. Students are encouraged to bring locks to secure their items while they are in class. Students must remove locks at the end of each day.

How do I know if the school is closed due to inclement weather or other  reasons?
Closings due to inclement weather or other emergencies are listed on our Class Cancellation Hotline.  When the weather turns bad, we assess cancelling classes three times during the day: 7am, 12pm, and 3pm. If we determine that classes will be cancelled, it will be listed on the hotline. To access the Class Cancellation Hotline, please call 617.695.6950, ext: 567 for the most up-to-date information.

What is the best way for me to get information about Boston Ballet School?
We communicate important School information and updates to our students primarily via email – so please make sure we have your email address. This enables you to receive communications such as BBS Connections, the school’s monthly newsletter. Boston Ballet’s website is updated frequently and is a great resource for students. Also, your Studio Administrators are there to help! If you have any questions or concerns, please ask them for assistance.
