        • Audition Day Questions

What do I need to do to prepare for my audition?
Boston Ballet does not pre-register for auditions. No headshots or resumes necessary. Arrive at the appointed time and location wearing appropriate dance attire; women, black leotard, pink tights, and bring Pointe shoes; men, black tights and white t-shirt.

Do women need to be on pointe to audition and be eligible for SDP?
No, Boston Ballet School recognizes that younger students may not yet be placed on pointe. Auditions are conducted accordingly. It does not affect a student’s eligibility for the program, we encourage all students to audition.

There are two auditions in my city – one for 10-14 year olds and one for 15-19 year olds. Which one should I attend?
Students must audition with their current age group. Audition group is determined by your age on the day of the audition.

What if I am unable to attend an audition in one of the Audition Tour Cities?
Attending an audition in person is strongly encouraged. If you are not able to attend a scheduled audition, you may audition by video. Video audition guidelines can be found here, on the "Video Auditions" tab.

          Program Questions

          How much does SDP cost?

          • SDP-Newton (Ages 10-14) Tuition: $2,925; Housing: $2,400 (5 weeks, classes Mon-Fri)
          • SDP-Boston (Ages 15-19) Tuition: $2,925; Housing: $2,400 (5 weeks, classes Mon-Fri)

Do I have to live in the dorms?
No, students may choose to commute from home or find alternate housing on their own. Students aged 10-11 are responsible for finding their own housing.

My student is 10 years old and does not live locally. Can she live in the dorms?
Housing is available for students ages 12 and up only. 10 and 11 year old students may attend, but families will need to arrange accommodations independently. Some students choose to stay with family or friends at their homes or nearby hotels.

What is the daily schedule like at SDP?
A typical day includes 4-6 hours of dance classes, with supplemental evening lectures and activities. More information for each program may be found on the “Dance Life” tab, here for Newton and here for Boston.

Are there different levels within the program? How and when does level placement happen?
All level placements are determined from a placement class that occurs on the first day of each program. No students are placed in any level prior to placement day.
SDP-Boston has 5 levels for women, with two classes per level, and 2 levels for men.
SDP-Newton has 3 levels for women, with two classes per level, and 1 level for men.

Can I request to room with a specific person?
Prior to arrival at SDP, all residential students fill out a Residential Information Form indicating living habits and preferences. Students may request a roommate on this form, but requests are not guaranteed. Our residential life staff pairs students based on age, curfew group and mutual roommate requests.

How do residential students commute between the dorms and the Boston Ballet studios?
SDP-Newton students are bussed between Lasell College and the Newton studios each day.
SDP-Boston students take Boston’s subway (the “T”) from Kenmore Square two short stops to Copley Square, and walk a short distance through Boston’s historic South End to the downtown studio. SDP-Boston residential students are provided with a prepaid "T" pass, required to travel in pairs, and are escorted by the Residential Staff at the beginning of the program to assist with the route. This "T" pass is included in the residential fees.

Is my student eligible for Boston Ballet School’s year round program after attending SDP?
During the second week of SDP, Boston Ballet School holds an audition for our year round pre-professional program. All SDP students are eligible to attend the audition, and if accepted, are notified within the third week of SDP. For more information about Boston Ballet School’s year round programs please click here.

        • Below are quotes from our end of the program surveys, which each student fills out the last week of SDP:

“All of the teachers were personal, ready to help you become both a great dancer as well as a person. I liked that the rules followed through and were enforced both at the studios and in residential life. The variety of classes offered really helped/allowed me to grow in so many new ways. The freedom given on the weekends allowed me to explore the city – so beautiful and historic! I would recommend SDP to everyone and hope to come back next year!”
          - Calley Skalnik, SDP – Boston 2010
          Oklahoma

“I have learned so much! Everyone will say this, but I strongly believe that this program has improved my dancing and also helped me grow and mature as a person. I have enjoyed this program so incredibly much, it has really been the right place for me!”
-Matthaeus Ware, SDP – Newton 2010
          Alberta, Canada

“SDP was wonderful! I love getting the opportunity to be dancing all day and observe others working, including company dancers. The dancing is amazing here, and just being in this beautiful building is an honor to me. I hope I will be here in the future!”
-Amanda DeVenuta, SDP – Boston 2010
          New York

“It has been an amazing experience for me to dance everyday and learn from many amazing teachers. Living in dorms has made me independent and it just has been great here! I love this program and want to do it again next year.”
-Riko Kanaida, SDP – Newton 2010
          Singapore

“I enjoyed it very much. I learned so much that I can take back with me. The teachers were all wonderful and brought something different to each class. The teachers gave a lot of helpful examples and corrections, individual and general.”
          - Alex Jureller, SDP – Boston 2010
          New York

“I have never learned and increased my dancing capabilities more than while I was here at Boston Ballet. The teachers are some of the best I’ve ever had. They taught in a friendly way that allowed me to absorb all of what they were saying.”
-Dante Piro, SDP – Newton 2010
          Virginia

“In the weeks leading up to SDP I was nervous about coming to Boston by myself and I wasn’t sure what to expect. However, the residential staff and SDP faculty created a very supportive environment in which I felt comfortable and able to grow. The teachers here are amazing and I improved so much. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to experience Boston Ballet’s SDP 2010!”
          - Sarah Howells, SDP – Boston 2010
          California

“I’m really glad I chose this program as my first summer intensive away from home. Everything from the city to the faculty to the facilities to the people were all amazing. I received a lot of attention from the faculty and improved a lot!”
-Estelle Vu, SDP – Newton 2010
          New Jersey

“I LOVED the program!! The teachers are awesome and always have the perfect corrections. I’ve become a stronger dancer technically and with my artistry. At SDP I learned that I can make myself improve by pushing myself and that has (and will continue to have) a huge impact on my dancing.”
-Erika Madrian, SDP – Newton 2010
          Masschusetts

“This has been the best ballet experience I have ever had and it has inspired me to take my training to the next level.”
-Aislinn Evans, SDP – Newton 2010
          New Hampshire

“This was my third year at Boston Ballet SDP and I just want to thank you for my time I have spent here. I have grown so much since my first day in Mr. Hird’s 1A class back in 2007 and it has been a wonderful journey. The training I have received these three years has helped me grow into a dancer that I am proud to be today. The faculty here can reach students and dancers in a special way that I have not experienced anywhere else. I don’t know what my future in dance will be, but I know I will continue to pass on a positive word about this program. I will cherish the days I have spent here forever. I hope more dancers like myself get to experience the faculty and training here the way I have.”
          - Cody Marick, SDP - Boston 2007, 2008, 2009
          Illinois

“Seeing the professional dancers teach class, taking class and just even walking around the building was amazing and inspirational. I loved being in the community of students, dancers, and artists. This will be an experience I’ll never forget.”
-Alix MacGillivray, SDP - Boston 2009
          Massachusetts

“As a returning student for 3 years, I have really and truly enjoyed my summers in Boston. This program offers everything a young dancer could want including challenging yet effective dance training and an historic and lively city to explore. I feel that not only have I grown in my dance technique, but I have seen a transformation in myself as this program has shaped who I am as a person. I have met some of my best friends here at this program, who have all helped me have the best 3 summers of my life. It is hard for me to imagine myself at any other summer program and I would like to thank you all for making this program so worth while. As I have seen myself grow into the advanced dancer I am today, I know that the Boston Ballet SDP has allowed me to reach my full potential as a dancer and discover the true artists inside me. This program has such a great balance of dance and freedom, which makes it much more enjoyable!”
          - Chloe Somberg, SDP - Boston 2007, 2008, 2009
          Illinois

          California

"Everything was wonderful here! The teachers, the RCs, the people who were working at the desks! I would not change anything. Thanks for this amazing experience! I am going to miss all of you! Hopefully I will see you guys again!"
